Action Comics #1001
Written by: Brian Michael Bendis
Art by: Patrick Gleason, Alejandro Sanchez, and Josh Reed
Let me start off by saying that I think this might be the best Superman comic I've read in years. I think everybody's skepticism about him coming to DC Comics is deemed unwarranted after reading this book. The story in this book about Superman investigating all theses fires popping up around Metropolis is unusual. At first, it doesn't seem like something Superman would usually bother with. But its his city and no crime is to small. What makes it even more interesting is Superman himself has been falsely accused of starting these fires. I love that the new fire chief doesn't even wanna tell Superman who the young boy is that accused him, since he's still technically a suspect. Once he does confront the boy though, the way he gets him to come clean about the lie was where Bendis' dialogue proved why he's the perfect writer for Superman. Lois and Jon are still out of the picture, but we see Lois in a n undisclosed location writing about something that could have disastrous repercussions. I can't wait to see where Bendis goes with this. By the end of the story we get introduced to this secret criminal fraternity, who are behind the fires while also introducing a new villain. This group seems like it has been hiding in the shadows for years and will be a thorn in Superman's side for some time. I especially love how they "hide" themselves from Superman.
The art has to be, hands down, Patrick Gleason's best work he's done yet. It almost felt like a different artist. The way he draws Clark and Superman with subtle differences, makes you understand how people wouldnt be able to figure out that they're the same person. I hope Gleason stays on this book for as long as Bendis stays. His art has such a classic feel to it. He very well may end up going down as one of the greates Superman artists of this generation.
I can't say enough good things about this book. Bendis has definitely delivered a great Superman story, it feels like he was born to write this character. I for one am in this for the long haul and can't wait for the next issue.
