Ian Flynn: The Man Behind the Blue Blur

Updated: Jan 24, 2020

Ian Flynn has been writing comics professionally for years. He's best know for his work on Sonic the Hedgehog for Archie Comics. He also wrote Mega Man for Archie as well. He wrote the fan favorite crossover between Sonic and Mega Man as well.

He has written over 100 adventures starring Sonic, but when Archie lost the license from SEGA that almost came to an end. Luckily IDW got the license and brought Ian on board o relaunch the title. Ian's work on Sonic has been some of my favorite. I'm so excited to see where he takes Sonic moving forward and I'm still holding out hope that the rest of the Freedom Fighters make their return in this current series.

Comic Lounge: As a lifelong Sonic the Hedgehog fan, I first discovered your work on that book. How did you first break in to the industry?

Ian Flynn: I applied to Archie Comics while completing university. After four years I caught a lucky break and was given a chance to show them what I could do. I worked hard and within a few months I was lead writer of Sonic the Hedgehog.

Comic Lounge: You've written Sonic for a long time, was writing Sonic a dream come true for you?

Ian: It was. I grew up watching the cartoons, playing the games and reading the comics. I’ve been very fortunate to be part of something I’ve enjoyed for so long.

Comic Lounge: What has your experience been like transitioning from Archie to IDW?

Ian: It’s both familiar and very different. Being contracted by IDW Publishing means starting all over with a new editorial team, new production schedules, and a new working relationship with SEGA.

Comic Lounge: The Freedom Fighters, like Sally, Antoine, etc. were some of my favorite characters. Are there any pla s to bring them into the new book?

Ian: That’s not up to me. SEGA has the final say in what spin-off material they’d allow to be revived.

Comic Lounge: Can you tease any upcoming stories in the book? Do you plan on staying with the book for a while?

Ian: I plan on writing Sonic for as long as they let me. Year Two of the book will see an even bigger adventure than Year One with much higher stakes.

Comic Lounge: You also wrote Mega Man for Archie as well, do you think there's a chance that book could move to IDW also?

Ian: That’s between IDW and Capcom.

Comic Lounge: Are there any characters you would love a chance at writing in the future?

Ian: On my wish list is StarFox, but the list of projects I’d love to be a part of is virtually endless.

Comic Lounge: Do you have any other upcoming projects besides your current books that you can talk about?

Ian: I’m writing a graphic novel series about Nintendo’s ARMS for Dark Horse Publishing due out next year. I

also have a podcast/gaming channel called the BumbleKast. You can find it and all my current projects on my website:
