Cosplay Spotlight: Kelly Poynter aka SLC Green Arrow

Updated: Jan 24, 2020

While thinking of new content to post to the site, cosplay came to mind. With cosplay being such a huge part of the comic book fan community, I thought it would be cool to spotlight some of the prominent cosplayers out there. The first name that cam to mind was SLC Green Arrow, Kelly Poynter.

I met Kelly about 3 years ago at WonderCon. My daughter loves Green Arrow and when she saw him she said" Daddy look, it's Arrow!". I immediately went over and asked if we could take a picture, and of course he said yes. He's such an awesome dude and he made my daughter's day, she had the biggest smile on her face.

It's things like that, which makes cosplaying so much more than just dressing up as your favorite characters. What Kelly, and countless others, do is make the con experience special, especially for the little ones. So if you haven't checked him out yet, give him a follow on Twitter ( @SLCGA) and Instagram (@slcgreenarrow)

COMIC LOUNGE: I'm a little familiar with your story, which is very inspiring, but can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

KELLY POYNTER: Sure, I was born in San Diego CA and at a young age was exposed to comics, thanks to my dad.  From there, comics cartoons and conventions were a staple in my childhood and growing up.

While going to college I worked at a comic shop and was easily my favorite job I’ve ever had.

In 2016 my wife and I relocated to American Fork Utah where we started our business, PinPoynt FX.  Cosplaying as Green Arrow since the fall of 2016.

CL: What inspired you to start cosplaying?

KP: When I would go SDCC I would dress up as QuailMan from "Doug", but cosplay really wasn’t the thing it is today. It was just something you did at a con.  Because of my size I never felt comfortable doing a spandex clad superhero, but by 2016 a lot had changed and I wanted to attempt a Green Arrow cosplay.

CL: I know you cosplay as Green Arrow, but are there any other characters you would like to do?

KP: I currently have an Unworthy Thor that I am very fond of and will be debuting a 2018 Marvel Comics Avengers Thor, later this year.

CL: What have been some memorable moments you've experienced while cosplaying?

KP: My two favorites are when I got to debut a Longbow Hunters Green Arrow for a signing with Mike Grell at a local shop. The other was at WonderCon when I got Dan DiDio to stop in his tracks and come back to inspect and complement my new Young Justice: Outsiders Green Arrow.

CL: How long do you see yourself continuing to cosplay?

KP: I will probably continue to cosplay for as long as I’m breathing haha, just maybe change it up as I age.

CL: What comics are  currently reading?

KP: Green Arrow, Avengers, Thor, Saga, Manifest Destiny and a lot more, too much to mention haha.

CL: What do you find most rewarding about what you do?

KP: Hands down adding to the convention experience for attendees, especially kids.

Also being able to help and serve around in the local community with charity events is always amazing.
