The Comic Lounge's Picks of the Week (5/1)

Updated: Jan 24, 2020

After an eventful week for all of us nerds, it will be nice to wind down and read some great comics. We finally got to see the culmination of 10 years of Marvel storytelling with AVENGERS: ENDGAME, what an amazing film filled with laughs and tears. Last week also saw "The Battle of Winterfell" on "Game of Thrones", an episode that left me full of anxiety and excitement at the same time. I don't want this show to end and you can be sure these late 3 episodes are going to be epic.

Anyways there's a lot of great stuff coming out this week, but these are the must buy books for 5/1.

DCEASED #1

We have a book where zombies infect the DCU, and I couldn't be more excited. This concept, while not new, is such a fun idea to bring to the DCU. Seeing Batman fight zombies is something I never knew I wanted until I saw this first cover. With Tom Taylor writing and Trevor Hairsine on art, this is not just a gimmicky book, these are some A-List creators that are sure to have readers on the edge of there seats. If your a DC fan, love zombies, or both- this is the book for you.

Here's the solicit:

“I looked, and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was Death, and Hades was following close behind him.”—Revelation 6:8

A mysterious techno-virus has been released on Earth, infecting 600 million people and turning them instantly into violent, monstrous engines of destruction. The heroes of the DCU are caught completely unprepared for a pandemic of this magnitude and struggle to save their loved ones first…but what happens to the World’s Greatest Heroes if the world ends? New York Times best-selling writer Tom Taylor (INJUSTICE) returns with a terrifying new tale and is joined by artists Trevor Hairsine (LEGENDS OF THE DARK KNIGHT) and Stefano Gaudiano (The Walking Dead).

DC'S YEAR OF THE VILLAIN #1

This is it guys, DC's next big story. As a diehard DC fan you know that any event is gonna be a must read for me, this is no different. First off look at this creative team, Scott Snyder, Brian Michael Bendis, and James Tynion IV writing and Alex Maleev, Jim Cheung, and Francis Manapul on art. Having already seen some of the pages, this is definitely a great story and has some amazing art as well. If Bendis and Maleev don't do a Green Arrow book, I don't know what I'll do. With a 25 cent price tag, you literally can't afford to miss this book.

Here's the solicit:

Evil is winning! Lex Luthor and The Legion of Doom conspire with Cosmic Gods, bending mankind toward a dark destiny. Elsewhere, the scourge of Leviathan spreads unchecked, seizing power in every corner of the world. And all the while the Batman Who Laughs busies himself in the shadows, aligned with no one—yet with sinister plans for all.

The carnage starts here as the badguys take center stage in “The Year of the Villain,” the most treacherous event in DC Comics history. Some act with united goals, others with plans selfish and secret, every one of them on a monstrous collision course against Batman, Superman and the heroes of the DC Universe. And our heroes will fail us.

Don’t miss the start of “The Year of the Villain,” featuring the talents of writers Brian Michael Bendis, Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV, artists Jim Cheung, Alex Maleev and Francis Manapul and cover artist Greg Capullo—all for just $0.25!

SAVAGE AVENGERS #1

When I first saw this announced, my firs thought was "Why?". Then that quickly turned into anticipation. Gerry Duggan and Mike Deodato having put together the most unlikely group of characters on one team. They had me at Wolverine and Conan together. How will Conan end up in the Marvel universe? What the hell is Punisher doing on a team with Venom? It's these questions that make this an interesting new book that I can't help but pick up. I expect this book to be a sleeper hit, so don't sleep on it guys.

Here's the solicit:

The most savage, most unkillable team of characters in the Marvel Universe is assembled! Wolverine! Venom! Elektra! Punisher! And in their midst – Conan the Barbarian! Conan has returned to the Marvel Universe and his new adventures begin here. What is the City of Sickles? Who is the Marrow God? How is the Hand involved? The roughest and most dangerous characters rumble through this new title starting with...Conan vs. Wolverine? ‘Nuff said.

SPENCER AND LOCKE 2 #1

Have you guys read the first volume of SPENCER AND LOCKE? If not, you guys are missing out on one of the best new series in the last couple years - Calvin and Hobbes meets crime/noir, come on guys that's genius. If yes, then you guys already know how amazing this book is. David Pepose and Jorge Santiago are putting our heroes through the ringer once again, this time with villain Roach Riley. With more classic comic strip characters set to debut in this series, I can only imagine how great this new volume will be. I can't say enough good stuff about this book. If you don't believe me, go check out all their Ringo Awards.

Here's the solicit:

Suspended by Internal Affairs, Detective Locke grapples with the demons of his past alongside his trusty partner, his childhood imaginary panther Spencer. But when Spencer and Locke face a scarred soldier named Roach Riley, will this unlikely pair finally meet their match?
