The Comic Lounge Picks of the Week (5/29)

Updated: Jan 24, 2020

This weeks needs no introduction, just look at these reeases. DC is absolutely killing it this week. We have HEROES IN CRISIS concluding, an event beginning with SUPERMAN: LEVIATHAN RISING, DOOMSDAY CLOCK winding down and the debut of the much anticipated BATMAN: THE LAST KNIGHT from Snyder and Capullo. Not to mention we have the amazing new THANOS book.

This is a huge week and I know there's soooo much to pick from, but these following books can't be missed.

BATMAN: LAST KNIGHT ON EARTH #1

There hasn't been a book I've anticipated more than this book right here. Snyder and Capullo are closing their chapter on their legendary Batman run. This is their final Batman story. This is the one book you can't miss. If you only buy one book this week, it needs to be this. Not only is it gonna be an awesome story with great art, but it's also oversized with 56 pages. I can't wait to see what they have in store. Just look at that cover, Batman is holding a lantern with Joker's head in it. That alone should make you want to get it.

Here's the solicit:

Bruce Wayne wakes up in Arkham Asylum. Young. Sane. And...he was never Batman. So begins this sprawling tale of the Dark Knight as he embarks on a quest through a devastated DC landscape featuring a massive cast of familiar faces from the DC Universe. As he tries to piece together the mystery of his past, he must unravel the cause of this terrible future and track down the unspeakable force that destroyed the world as he knew it... From the powerhouse creative team of writer Scott Snyder and artist Greg Capullo, the team that reinvented Batman from the emotional depths of "Court of Owls" to the bombastic power of DARK NIGHTS: METAL, DC Black Label is proud to present the bimonthly, three-issue miniseries BATMAN: LAST KNIGHT ON EARTH, published at DC's standard comic trim size. This could be the last Batman story ever told...

SUPERMAN: LEVIATHAN RISING SPECIAL

Here it is guys, the lead in to EVENT LEVIATHAN. If you've been reading Bendis' Superman books, especially ACTION COMICS, then you can't afford to miss this one. It picks up after Action's last arc and is the perfect segue into EVENT LEVIATHAN. This issue is 80 pgs., so it's sure to be chock full of essential info heading into the main event. That last ACTION COMICS arc was some of Bendis' best work, and I can only imagine what he has in store for us with this issue. Plus we get a peek at the creative teams for the new LOIS LANE and JIMMY OLSEN books.

Here's the solicit:

An all-star roster of writers and artists highlight the new threat of Leviathan, but also tees up new ongoing series for Jimmy Olsen by writer Matt Fraction and artist Steve Lieber, and Lois Lane by writer Greg Rucka and artist Mike Perkins, coming in June! As Leviathan enacts a plan to take down Superman, it's up to Lois, Jimmy and the heroes of the DC Universe to rescue the Man of Steel.

THANOS #2

Duuude, that last issue was soooo good. Tini Howard did such a great job writing Thanos. It's great to get this new aspect of the character along with his relationship with Gamora. If you're craving more Thanos after watching Endgame then this is definitely he book for you.

Here's the solicit:

NATURE VS. NURTURE! •  Did Thanos make Gamora who she is, or was she always the deadliest assassin in the galaxy? •  Plus, see the origins of Thanos' Black Order!

HEROES IN CRISIS #9

Guys, this is another book that should need no explanation for being on this list. After 10 long months we finally have reached the conclusion to HEROES IN CRISIS. While I have had mixed feelings about this book, I can't argue that this is some of Tom King's best writing, along with the amazing art that has graced these pages, especially Clay Mann's. What will be the fate of Wally West? Everything will be answered here.

Here's the solicit:

The most-talked-about miniseries of the year reaches its stunning finale! The mystery behind the murders at Sanctuary is solved, but the mind behind it is one the heroes never expected. With their deepest secrets exposed, the Trinity has to consider how to carry on. Should the tragedy cause them to redouble their efforts to help their hurting comrades, or will they need to close up shop? The answers will be found in the ashes of this final showdown, and the fates of Booster Gold, Harley Quinn and the rest hang in the balance.

DOOMSDAY CLOCK #10

It's about damn time. Finally!!! After all the constant reschedules, we are getting the long overdue release of DOOMSDAY CLOCK #10. Geoff Johns and Gary Frank have delivered one of the most talked about books in years. With only 2 issues left, I can only imagine what they have in store for us. Have you guys seen that JSA page? That alone has me eagerly awaiting this issue. Will we get answers to why Dr. Manhattan messed with the DC timeline? I guess you'll have to read to find out.

Here's the solicit:

This stunning issue of the critically acclaimed hit maxiseries reveals the secrets behind Dr. Manhattan and his connection to the DC Universe.
