The Comic Lounge Picks of the Week (6/5)

Updated: Jan 24, 2020

WOW!!! What a week we had last week. DC had a slew of amazing releases. It was probably the best NCBD in recent memory.

This week sees the release of a great group of books. With new issues of CRIMINAL and BIRTHRIGHT ,the penultimate issue of WAR OF THE REALMS, this is another week of can't miss issues. Not to mention another Morrison and Sharp GREEN LANTERN and the conclusion of "Sixth Dimension" in Justice League. These are all books you definitely wanna pick up.

BIRTHRIGHT #36

Here we go guys the beginning of the latest arc, in one of the best fantasy books being published today. This is one series that I feel more people should be reading. Williamson and Bressan have expertly crafted one of the most entertaining books being published today. This issue continues to build the tension after the end of the last arc. I can't wait to see where things end up after the insane cliffhanger.

Here's the solicit:

On July 1st, 1946, two park rangers made first contact with a monster born of magic. Now Mikey Rhodes must uncover the secret history of Earth if he is to save it from certain doom.

CRIMINAL #5

If you're not reading this series, shame on you. Brubaker an Phillips are the premier team in comics, everything they do is pure genius. After returning to their fan favorite series CRIMINAL as an ongoing, fans went nuts. From the first issue it's been nothing short of amazing. This issue begins the first multipart story arc and chronicles the last days of CRIMINAL mainstay, Teeg Lawless. Like every CRIMINAL story, you don't have to have prior knowledge to jump into the series. Each arc is new reader friendly. So if you haven't read CRIMINAL, now's the time to jump on board. If you have been reading, get ready for one of the most important arcs yet.

Here's the solicit:

Dan Farraday, private detective and skip-tracer, comes to town looking for a dangerous woman. This issue begins the long and winding tale of THE SUMMER OF '88... the story of the last days of Teeg Lawless. As always, CRIMINAL contains back page art and articles only found in the single issues.

GREEN LANTERN #8

This is the issue we've all been waiting for, Green Lantern and Green Arrow teaming up. GREEN LANTERN has easily been in the top 3 best books at DC, Morrison and Sharp have created a modern masterpiece that continues to get better with each passing issue. I have no doubt that this will be one of their best issues, especially with a classic Hal and Ollie team-up. Not to mention, look at that badass cover.

Here's the solicit:

Green Lantern teams up with Green Arrow to stop a cosmic drug cartel that's using Earth as its main distribution base! It's a  brilliant homage to the team-ups of old, as Morrison and Sharp do the 2019 version in a story we can only call "Space Junkies!"

JUSTICE LEAGUE #25

The conclusion to the biggest JUSTCE LEAGUE story yet, the "Sixth Dimension", is here. Snyder and Jimenez have pulled out all the stops in this balls-to-the-wall story arc. I won't give to much away, but this might just be the most important issue in Snyder's run so far. You NEED to get this issue.

Here's the solicit:

The "Sixth Dimension" storyline wraps up in this oversize issue as Superman faces down the World Forger to save the Justice League! Can Superman withstand the might of a being that can create worlds from nothing?! Plus, with the Justice League away, Mr. Mxyzptlk's been wreaking havoc! Can anyone on Earth stand up to the fifth-dimensional menace?

WAR OF THE REALMS #5

As excited as I am for this issue, I'm really sad that it's ending. Jason Aaron's THOR run has been one of the most epic runs I've ever read, Geoff John's GREEN LANTERN being the other. WAR OF THE REALMS has been one of the few times where the event not only lives up to the hype but surpasses it. This series ending means we're that much closer to the end of Aaron's epic Thor saga. So for now, let us enjoy these last moments of perhaps one of the gretest stories ever told in the history of comics.

Here's the solicit:

MIDGARD'S LAST STAND Malekith's army gets a whole new crop of recruits - the dead! As Midgard transforms under the rule of Malekith and his allies, the dead rise up to form a new Niffleheim! The Black Panther calls in every hero on his roster to fight for Earth, from Spider-Man and the Spiders of Hel to Ghost Rider and Balder the Brave. But if there's any hope for the Ten Realms, it'll come from the skies...
