The Comic Lounge Picks of the Week (6/12)

Updated: Jan 24, 2020

Dude! What an amazing group of books released last week. There were so many stories, that remind us why comic books truly is one of the most special mediums out there. If you don't believe me check out our reviews from last week, 3 books got 10/10.

Well this week is shaping up to be just as exciting. Not only do you we have the continuation of some great series. But we have a couple new number 1's as well as the beginning of a much anticipated event over at DC.

So for this week, you won't want to miss this exciting batch of picks.

SONATA #1

A new Image series, and it's a fantasy book? Sold! With the track record Image has had for their new releases, you can bet this is gonna be another sold out book. With a female led book,  where our protagonist takes on Giants, what's not to love. The plot is amazing and the art is breathtaking. This book was fantastic from beginning to end. Trust, this is not a book you're gonna want to pass up.

Here's the solicit:

"THE FALL"-In this all-new series from DAVID HINE (THE BULLETPROOF COFFIN), BRIAN HABERLIN (WITCHBLADE), and GEIRROD VAN DYKE (SPAWN, MEDIEVAL SPAWN/WITCHBLADE), two cultures clash on a planet they each believe is their Promised Land. The Rans are a peace-loving people, but the Tayans are a race of warriors who seek to colonize and control. The mysterious Sleeping Giants also call this place home, though no one knows if they're monsters or the gods of legend. And amidst all this, a young woman named Sonata is willing to break all the rules to find her place in this world-and she's not about to let sleeping gods lie.

EVENT LEVIATHAN #1

I shouldn't even have to say anything here. Two words, Bendis and Maleev. There you go that's you're reason to buy the book. Every book these guys have done together have been nothing short of amazing. They are taking the greatest detectives in the DCU and pitting them against the mysterious Leviathan. If you've been reading Bendis' Superman books then, you probably already plan on getting this. This is probably one of the most anticipated DC events since BLACKEST NIGHT. So trust me when I say this, "YOU HAVE TO BUY THIS BOOK".

Here's the solicit:

The groundbreaking and always-inventive team of writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Alex Maleev (Jinxworld's SCARLET, Marvel's Daredevil) reunite on a mystery thriller that stretches across the DC Universe and touches every character from Batman to Superman to the Question to Talia al Ghul. With startling ease, a newly dangerous and aggressive Leviathan wipes out all its competition and now turns its sights to molding the world into its vision of order. Can the new threat's growth be stopped...and who's guiding its new agents of chaos?

THE BATMAN WHO LAUGHS #6

This book has been so great that they added a seventh issue. Snyder and Jock have created a quiet little masterpiece. They're both putting everything into this book, and it shows on every page. Not to mention it's one of the most horrific Batman stories in the history of the character. With this tying in to Snyder's overall interconnected DC story, you can't afford to miss this book.

Here's the solicit:

True happiness begins in the heart. Our memories and emotions can play tricks on us, though, and divert one's reality into something completely different. The Batman Who Laughs has based his entire worldview on this very concept, and it is in this moment that he must finally confront the one man who stands in his way, the one man who could complete or halt his plan...the last Bruce Wayne. It is here, on the home turf of Wayne Manor, that Bruce relives the happiest moment of his life-the moment he became the Batman Who Laughs. Will Batman be able to outthink the Dark Multiverse version of himself and stop his most sinister end? Or will the original Dark Knight succumb fully and let go of his morality? While good almost always wins, this issue is the start of something more...setting up a larger plan based in the ultimate betrayal of infection, loyalty and true happiness. This is not the end...it's only the beginning.

FLASH #72

OK, If you haven't been reading this, what's wrong with you? This is probably one of the best Flash stories ever told. Williamson and Porter, have expanded on Barry's origins, in a fresh and exciting way. Not only is it reshaping what you think you know, but it's also connected to present events in the DCU. Plus there are so many cool little easter eggs littered through out the story, just figuring them out has been a blast. And who knew the Turtle could be such a dire threat. Truly one of the DC's best ongoing series right now.

Here's the solicit:

"The Flash Year One" continues! Things are not looking pretty for the Flash, who just got his scarlet butt handed to him by the Turtle. If Barry Allen thought being a hero was going to be easy, he'd better think again after this beating--but will it be enough to detour his destiny?

SILVER SURFER: BLACK #1

Cates and Silver Surfer? Nuff Said! I'm not even gonna waste your time reading why I think you should buy this. I think this solicit says it all. Go buy this on Wednesday. You all need this in your life, TRUST.

Here's the solicit:

Spinning out of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #1, almost the entire galaxy's defenders have been blown through a black hole, including the Silver Surfer! But the story doesn't end there... In order to fight back the oblivion, Surfer will have to fight to save his own soul and not lose himself to the void. Follow the Sentinel of the Spaceways on a journey that will change him forever! From superstars Donny Cates (VENOM, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY) and Tradd Moore (ALL-NEW GHOST RIDER, VENOM)!

SPENCER & LOCKE 2 #3

One of the best indie books being published today. After a crazy second issue, we're heading into the climactic battle between Locke and Roach. This has been one of the most entertaining books each time it comes out. Both funny and emotional. Pepose and Santiago Jr. are forces to be reckoned with. They better be working on Vol. 3, because I don't know what I would do without more Spencer & Locke.

Here's the solicit:

The stakes have never been higher than in SPENCER & LOCKE 2 #3, as Action Lab's Ringo Award-nominated saga takes our heroes to the edge! Hovering between life and death, Spencer and Locke must make the ultimate choice as they journey across a terrifying and otherworldly battlefield. Meanwhile, Roach Riley aims to paint the town red — that is, unless an unexpected hero has something to say about it!
