MIke Deodato has long been one of the elite talents in the comic book industry. His resume boasts some of the most well known characters in comics and his name is synonymous with Marvel Comics. He's worked on everything from INCREDIBLE HULK to the Avengers line of books and even a stint on WONDER WOMAN at DC.
Some of his standout series would probably be his DARK AVENGERS, THUNDERBOLTS, THANOS and OLD MAN LOGAN. HIs dark and gritty style is unmistakable. So it's no wonder that he takes on these characters that are drawn to the dark an morally ambiguous.
He recently helped launch SAVAGE AVENGERS with Gerry Duggan, which saw the most "savage" group of Avengers ever assembled. It also saw Conan brought into the Marvel Universe and thrust him onto this team of killers. With 2 issues out, it's been an insane book that can't be missed.
In August he sees his creator owned book BERSERKER UNBOUND, with Jeff Lemire, hit the stands. It tels the tale of a barbarian being transported to modern times, madness ensues.
With him focusing exclusively on creator owned books, it's an exciting time to be a Mike Deodato fan. We finally get to see a Mike Deodato "unbound".
COMIC LOUNGE: When did your love for comics first begin?
MIKE DEODATO: My father introduced to the marvelous world of comics, very early. I remember at age of five I was already enchanted with his comics collection, mostly old classics from the forties and fifties.
COMIC LOUNGE: Were there any comics or creators who stood out to you growing up?
DEODATO: Sal Buscema and Steve Englehart had a great impact on me when I was younger Their runs on CAPTAIN AMERICA and DEFENDERS were really special.
COMIC LOUNGE: Which artists, comic book or otherwise, would you say have had the biggest influence on you?
DEODATO: As an artist, the most important were Neal Adams, Dick Giordano, Frank Frazetta, Will Eisner, Jim Steranko and Berni Wrightson among others.
COMIC LOUNGE: You've worked on some of the biggest characters such as Wonder Woman, Thor and Spider-Man. What were some of your favorite stories from your time on those characters?
DEODATO: SO many to choose, but I think OLD MAN LOGAN, INCREDIBLE HULK, THANOS,THUNDERBOLTS and DARK AVENGERS are the ones that come to mind.
COMIC LOUNGE: Some of my favorite work of yours was your time working in NEW AVENGERS, DARK AVENGERS and SECRET AVENGERS. All of which are considered essential reading for any Avengers fan. What characters from those teams did you enjoy drawing the most? How does it differ illustrating a team book as opposed to a solo character?
DEODATO: Team books demand more time because of the number of characters. Personally I prefer solo characters. Wolverine and Captain America are some of my favorites.
COMIC LOUNGE: Now you've recently helped launch SAVAGE AVENGERS. With such a unique team, what drew you to this title? How long are you planning on staying on the book?
DEODATO: I left the Marvel last Thursday after 24 years of fun drawing the characters who made my childhood so magical. It was a nice farewell gift from them to give me a book with characters I LOVE to draw. Issue five is my last one.
COMIC LOUNGE: You dark and gritty style is unmistakable and really suits that savage team of Avengers. How did you develop your current style from the one you had in the early 90s?
DEODATO: It was not planned, it just happened. I was heavily influenced by the Image style in the nineties and that evolved to the present one,
COMIC LOUNGE: Ok let's talk about your new book BERSERKER UNBOUND, with Jeff Lemire. Can you tell us a little bit about the book?
DEODATO: I fell in love with Jeff's work during our run on Thanos and I was ecstatic when he invited me to do a creator-owned together, I wanted to do a barbarian book then he came up with this story about a merciless sword and sorcery warrior who finds himself blasted through a wormhole to a modern-day metropolis where he must protect those around him from an evil wizard determined to send him to hell. I had the chance to draw the most savage battles ever and the most touching moments as well. Jeff is brilliant.
COMIC LOUNGE: Is this your first creator owned title?
DEODATO: I have done other stuff in Brasil but this one is the most important for me. A turning point in my career because it marks my decision to dedicate myself only to creator-owned projects from now on.
COMIC LOUNGE: Are there any other projects you're currently working on that you can talk about?
DEODATO: Yes. They will be announced very soon.
COMIC LOUNGE: Last one, would you ever work at DC again?
DEODATO: I would love to, but my focus now is on my creator-owned career
