The Comic Lounge Picks of the Week (8/21)

Another week and another great batch of books. Here are the books us at the Comic Lounge think deserve your attention.

RYAN'S PICKS

CRIMINAL #7

You all know what a diehard Brubaker & Phillips fan I am, so of course this was gonna be one of my picks. Since CRIMNIAL relaunched, it's been one of my favorite books. This current arc has been focusing on Teeg Lawless and his inevitable death. This is one of Image's best books, so don't miss out on this perfect crime book.

Here's the solicit:

The best monthly comic on the market keeps the hits coming! Young Ricky Lawless and Leo (from CRIMINAL, VOL. 1: COWARD) take the spotlight this issue, as the epic story of the death of Teeg Lawless continues! As always, CRIMINAL contains back page art and articles only found in the single issues.

HELLBOY AND THE BPRD SATURN RETURNS #1

New Hellboy??? Yes please! Anything Hellboy is sure to be on my pull and will definitely always be one of the books I'm most excited for. The premise for this one sounds very intriguing and I love what they've been doing with the character, showing past adventures. If you haven't been reading, fear not, this is the perfect time to jump in to the adventures of everyone's favorite monster.

Here's the solicit:

A small town in New Hampshire that has been plagued by disappearances is shaken when a local discovers a pile of corpses that date back decades, and Hellboy and B.P.R.D. Agent Kinsley arrive on the scene only to be overwhelmed by supernatural theories for the ritualistic killings. Mike Mignola and Scott Allie team up with veteran Mignolaverse artist Christopher Mitten, along with new colorist Brennan Wagner and letterer Clem Robins.

GENEVIEVE'S PICK

STRAYED #1

Dark Horse has been teasing this new series for months now and I couldn't be happier to finally pick it up this week.

Not only does it look incredibly beautiful with the art and the colors, but the plot also sounds original and one of a kind.

Who wouldn't be excited about a story where a cat is the hero, involving astral projection and taking place in a galaxy far from here? I know for sure it's the promise of a unique and incomparable ride!

Here's the solicit:

"In the far future, a military-industrial complex reigns over all humanity and actively destroys distant alien worlds. The galaxy's only hope can be found through an unlikely pair: an astral-projecting cat named Lou and his loving owner Kiara. Trading nine lives for the well-being of billions, their revolt is a battle for love, friendship, compassion, and the soul of humanity. "

DYLAN'S PICK

EXCELLENCE #4

Every single issue of this comic has been just amazing. Break the oaths of age-old tradition and  procedure to do what is right? to do what is necessary? Risk family and friendship for the sake of the person most important to you? What would you do if you were in Spencer Dales’ high-tops? With each passing issue the action becomes more bold and the art more fearless, and in turn, so does Spencer.

Here's the solicit:

New York is rocked by a massive wizard’s duel like you’ve never seen before! What secrets are Spencer Dales and Aaron Mills hiding from each other? And who among the Aegis stands to profit?

TREVOR'S PICKS

AQUAMAN #51

The last time we saw Black Manta was during the Drowned Earth event. His drive to take down Aquaman had him going off plan from Lex Luthor and the rest of Legion of Doom. Seems like that's all water under the bridge to the new Apex Lex so I'm excited to see what The Offer has for Manta. Also the return of Aqualad!

Here's the solicit:

Lex Luthor's surprising offer to Black Manta is revealed! But is it too good to be true? Plus, a gruesome murder in Amnesty Bay shocks the town to its core...and the prime suspects are none other than the Old Gods! Can Aquaman and his new partner Aqualad solve this murder mystery?

POWERS OF X #3

Powerful new info and powerful new questions were brought to us in the last issue of Powers of X. Has Hickman given us the corner pieces of the puzzle we need to begin piecing it all together? If you felt like last issues left you unsure then don't worry, cuz we are getting back to back Powers of X!

Here's the solicit:

As Xavier sows the seeds of the past, the X-Men's future blossoms into trouble for all mutantdom. Superstar writer Jonathan Hickman (NEW AVENGERS, INFINITY, FF) continues reshaping the X-Men's past, present and future with breakout artist R.B. Silva (UNCANNY X-MEN)!

CIDNYA'S PICK

BATMAN #77

Cidnya here! Batman 77 comes out this week and I cannot be more excited! After issue 50, it broke my heart and so many other fans but Tom King promised that City of Bane was going to make it all better! While it will never mend my heart perfectly, seeing Selina Kyle makes my heart so happy! Issue 77 is hopefully going to give us more Bat/Cat moments and hopefully keep escalating the stakes established in issue 75!

Here's the solicit:

"City of Bane" continues! The last of the independent villains are on the run, leaving Gotham City entirely to Bane and his cronies-including Flashpoint Batman and Gotham Girl! Though this means a semblance of peace on the streets, the iron grip of tyranny is squeezing all life out of Gotham. And with Bane's machinations keeping other heroes out, the city really needs the Batman to return. Is Bruce Wayne ready to face his toughest foes yet...his father and the man who broke his back?
