The Comic Lounge Picks of the Week (8/28)

More awesomeness awaits this week. With new CL writers we have even more picks to recommend you guys. These are the books we all think you should check out.

This is unlike any father/son story you've ever read. IDW is showing that they can produce some of the best creator owned books out there, with this latest release.

The perfect blend of great charter work, fantastic art and a touch of darkness. This is probably one of the most entertaining psychologically captivating books I've read in a long time. You guys need to be reading this book.

Here's the solicit:

Abraham Stubbs and his father Noah roam America in a nomadic existence. Convinced they are being pursued by sinister government forces, Noah has them living off the grid, burgling houses to survive. Elsewhere, on Mount Rector, the lone survivor of a climbing expedition staggers homeward, covered in blood. Both are on an inevitable collision course with the picturesque Canadian resort town of Braeriach. From writer John Lees (Sink) and artist Ryan Lee (Archer & Armstrong), featuring colors from Doug Garbark and letters from Shawn Lee. An exciting psychological thriller and horror story, all in one!

YES! Ive been waiting for this book since it was announced. We finally get a book with Batman and Superman together, again. Plus they're going up again the Batman Who Laughs.

Which heroes have been infected by the dark multiverse and how will the World's Finest save them? Williamson is sure to deliver a great story, hopefully with a touch horror to it.  Couple that with the epic art of David Marquez and this is the one DC book you won't want to miss.

Here's the solicit:

Up in the sky, in the dark of the night, trust no one-for the Secret Six walk among us. Spinning out of the devastating events of the Batman Who Laughs, Superman and Batman are together once more in an all-new monthly series-and they're facing a terrifying new threat that could strike from anywhere. The Dark Knight and the Man of Steel must journey into the depths of Gotham City to learn which of their fellow heroes has been transformed into the horrifying horseman of their most dangerous and deranged foe ever. Our heroes will need to fight to survive, but an even more dangerous question lurks in the shadows: Can Superman and Batman even trust each other?

I literally shouldn't even have to explain why this is one of my picks. Since issue 1 of HOUSE OF X both HOX and POX have been selling out and been the talk of comic book fans across the world. There hasn't been something this exciting with X-Men in years.

If you're not reading this then you need to wake up and run over to your LCS and pick up every issue you can. This is the beginning of the one of the most epic chapters in X-Men history.

Here's the solicit:

Learn the truth about one of the X-Men's closest allies...and then begin the fight for the future of mutantkind! Superstar writer Jonathan Hickman (AVENGERS, SECRET WARS, FANTASTIC FOUR) continues reshaping the X-Men's world with Marvel Young Gun artist Pepe Larraz (EXTERMINATION, AVENGERS)!

It's She-Hulk! Gah! This has been an issue I've been looking forward to since they announced it. I love She-Hulk! She needs another series for me to enjoy but for now I'll take this. After watching Bullseye get crap kicked out of him in Valkyrie #2 I'm looking forward to an encore with Jennifer Walters. But which version of She-Hulk is Jen going to be? Sensational? Savage? Either way, with Alexandra Petri writing it in sure it will be Incredible!

Here's the solicit:

ACTS OF EVIL! •  Bullseye being hired for an assassination? Just another Tuesday. But when he decides to pin it on She-Hulk? Bad idea. •  Strap in as everyone's favorite lawyer-slash-Hulk, Jennifer Walters, takes on the mad marksman in a classic case of character defamation...with a heaping helping of SMASH. •  Plus: Robots! Why? Well, you'll just have to wait and see...

Here we go! Entering the third act in this space Opera by Tini Howard & Ariel Olivetti! Tini Howard is fast becoming one of my favorite writers with Thanos and Belit. And Olivetti’s fun pictures of dismemberment round out the enjoyment I’m having with this series.

Here's the solicit:

• Mutiny aboard Zero Sanctuary! •  As Butcher Squadron launches a rebellion against the Mad Titan, will Thanos be able to quell their revolt? •  Or will he have to turn their space station into a bloodbath in order to hold onto power?

Sera and The Royal Stars came on the scene as a beautiful book about a princess trekking through the Empire of Parsa to save her people from death and civil war. This quest story showcases writer Jon Tsuei as a great addition to the fantasy genre. As well, Audrey Mock’s art is rendered gorgeously with bold colors and striking character designs.

Here's the solicit:

After rescuing the Eye of the Bull, Sera returns to Parsa, only to discover it is no longer her home. Just when it seems war has stripped Sera of everything she holds dear, a surprising ally emerges. Together they set out to turn the tables on her uncle Shaheen's invading forces.

If you've read my latest review, you know how amazing Heathen Vol.1 was. So of course I have no choice to pick up this second volume. Will Brynhild be able to protect Aydis from Odin's wrath? Will Aydis be able to prove she's enough of a woman to live free and love whoever she wants? *be right back, running to my local comic store*

Here's the solicit:

Aydis the banished Viking sets sail on the open sea to reach Heimdall, the magical entrance to the land of the gods. She'll need the help of a crew of worldly pirate women and man-eating mermaids to survive the dangerous journey. Back on land, the cursed Valkyrie Brynhild and the goddess of love Freyja are chipping away at Odin's power, testing the god-king's patience and tempting his wrath. Collects issues #4-8.

MALL # 1

August has been a month of strong books. Vault isn't holding back during this last week. I'd sum up MALL as a post-apocalyptic critique on capitalism. Brands own people. Civilization is in ruins. The only thing people know... is the mall. This book is going to be unlike anything on the stands.

If that doesn't convince you to buy it, just know that screenwriter Gary Dauberman is co-writing the book. Some movies he's written are Annabelle, It (2017) and The Nun. Comic writer Michael Moreci (Wasted Space, The Plot) is co-writing with Zak Hartong on art. I'm excited for the variant cover, an homage to Blade the Vampire Slayer!

Here's the solicit:

Here in the heartland of the U.S. of A., the world has ended! But worry not, because the mall still stands. And within the walls of this consumeristic mecca lies a new world order: box store tribes and name brand gangs, all vying for limited space and resources. So, can worry! Especially for poor Andre Reed, who, after the assassination of a tribal leader, has to navigate the mad haven to prove his innocence, and prevent the end of world, again.

Being the Fantastic Four junkie that I am, it was impossible for me to not be excited about this spin-off F4 book. Gerry Duggan on an F4 title is a perfect fit. He's going to mix the classic Lee and Kirby flavors with some newness. It'll be a must buy for long-time F4 fans and new ones, too.

You're going to get passionate creators like Duggan, Greg Smallwood and Luciano Vecchio working on these stories. It's going to be a fun world-building comic with a lot of heart. Also if you dig Ben Grimm, definitely pick this up.

Here's the solicit:

• The first of a series of regular essential releases expanding on the ongoing legend of the Fantastic Four and their world! •  The FF are now living on Yancy Street, but not all of their neighbors are happy about that. •  The Thing investigates a nasty piece of vandalism that conjures up painful old memories as he takes a trip down memory lane through the Lower East Side and it's made all the more dangerous by...THE TERRIBLE TRIO!

I’m not quite sure what was scarier in the first issue - what the family is afraid of, or the state of them being frightened. The art was ominous and heavy on the ink; grim and filthy, how a horror comic should be. I got to chat a little bit with Andry in a recent con about the inspiration of this series, and he shared with me a really eerie one! If you’re curious after this issue, you oughta ask him, yet I get a feeling we’ll be questioning ‘til the end!

Here's the solicit:

In the aftermath of a Wave, Paxton continues his journey in search of medical assistance for his sick son. Left to fend for themselves at the family cabin, the kids are visited by a mysterious stranger. Meanwhile, Paxton, joined by a welcome companion on the road, reaches the settlement of Hospitality-only to find the welcome less than hospitable.

I can’t get any more of these dark fantasy/mysteries as we happen to be blessed these last few weeks! The series’ talk on character development from suffering, is really peaking my interest. There’s always something humanizing hearing about people’s struggles. Wizards or mages, I’m in!

Here's the solicit:

A Songs For The Dead story: Bethany, the necromancer with a heart of gold, and Elissar, her prone-to-brawling companion, are off to find the Covenant--a sanctuary for Bethany's otherwise reviled magic. Unfortunately, their map makes no sense. Seeking the help of a young wizard named Jonas, whose knowledge may unravel the map's secrets, Bethany and Elissar discover a mysterious illness plaguing The Foggard temple, home to the ancient order of mages. Double-unfortunately, Bethany and Elissar are not on the best of terms following the recent and violent encounter at Boulder's Envy.

Your friendly neighborhood series is back with AN ALL MJ ISSUE!! Is it a day in the life? Does she save the day? What's going on with Aunt May!?? This more human and intimate driven look into our favorite wall crawler is why it's my current #1 Spidey book and I can't wait to find out what happens!

Here's the solicit:

We haven't seen Mary Jane Watson since #1, but that's about to change with this almost ALL-MJ issue! MJ saves Spidey, helps Aunt May and basically saves the day. Face it, readers, you just hit the jackpot.
