The Comic Lounge Picks of the Week (9/4)

Here they are guys!!! The picks for this week. Don't miss out on all of these exciting new and continuing series.

Ok I'll admit the initial reason I wanted to check this book out, was the fact that it was part of the Berger's Books imprint at Dark Horse. Everything that has come out from them has been critically acclaimed.

Now I know why. I won't get to much in to the details, I'll leave my review for that, but I will say that this is without a doubt one of the strangest comics I've read in a while. That alone warrants a a recommendation from me.

Here's the solicit:

EVERYTHING is a gleaming new mega-department store which arrives to extraordinary thrill-and rapidly escalates to inexplicable mania in the small town of Holland, Michigan. When random hellish fires and unshakable psychic disturbances start to overtake the community, a few-like depressive out-of-towner Lori and a suspicious local named Rick-begin to suspect EVERYTHING and its catalog-perfect manger, Shirley. Who-or what-exactly is in charge here . . . and what insidious plans are in store? From Christopher Cantwell, acclaimed writer of She Could Fly and co-creator of AMC;s Halt and Catch Fire, and celebrated artist I.N.J. Culbard (The New Deadwardians, Brink) comes a new monthly ongoing series. Everything: a truly bizarre story about the most horrifying pursuit of happiness you've ever read.

Alright guys, what can I say besides, I absoluelty love this fucking book. It's Wedding Crashers meets Die Hard, what else can you ask for. It's literally one of my favorite new books.

Everyone needs to check this out.

Here's the solicit:

It was the wedding from Hell, and that was before the bank robbers showed up. What do a conflicted bride, her dysfunctional family, a gang of Elvis-themed crooks, and one relentless sheriff have in common? They're all about to discover love is the ultimate hostage situation.

YES!! FINALLY!! The Legion is back!

Not only do we get the return of this beloved team, but we take a journey through the history and future of the DCU. With an insane lineup of artists joining Bendis. This is sure to be one of the most fun comic books coming out this week.

Plus, as a diehard DC fan, I can't wait to see all these different timelines and characters. The excitement is real!!!!

Here's the solicit:

Brought to you by some of comics' greatest talents, this epic story spans the course of 1,000 years and, for the very first time, connects all of DC's future timelines! Starring the unlikeliest of DC heroes as she learns to cope with newfound immortality and roams through the disparate societies of Batman Beyond, Kamandi and Tommy Tomorrow, wrestling with her own inner demons and desperately trying to find her purpose in an ever-changing world. Do not miss this truly unique take on tomorrow's DC Universe, all leading up to a special launch on the millennium!

I eat their Coffee Crisp and I enjoy their Tim Hortons, but it's time for me to get to know the heroes of my neighbors up North a bit better. Looks like I'm crossing the border for this week's review!

Here's the solicit:

STRONG AND FREE! Grab your hat and come travel light... adventure lies just around the bend! Three brand-new tales no one has ever told...until now! Join the greatest creators the Great White North has to offer as we unearth the secret history of the classic Alpha Flight stalwarts: Puck! Snowbird! Talisman! Northstar! Marrina! Guardian! Vindicator!

SPACE STATION INFILTRATION! Last issue of House of X we finally got to see our team leader Cyclops assemble a group to stop a giant robot from making smaller (but still big) robots up in space. The anti-mutant humans on board aren't going down without a fight though and now with this issue will we know... if the X-Men survived the experience.

Here's the solicit:

Xavier's dream turns deadly for some of his students as they fight back against the humans' plan to eliminate them. Superstar writer Jonathan Hickman (FANTASTIC FOUR, AVENGERS, SECRET WARS) continues his reshaping of the X-Universe alongside Young Gun artist Pepe Larraz (EXTERMINATION, AVENGERS). The Future of the X-Men begins here!

Based on a webcomic I've (shamely) never heard of before, I'm super excited to pick up the first ISSUE of BATTLEPUG this week. The premise sounds super fun, original and an easy read, something I'm always looking for. To be honest, I wasn't sure if it was a real comic at first since I thought it was a pretty crazy concept for a new series. But crazy is always sure value and I'm hoping it's gonna be quite entertaining and will make me laugh!

Also: giant pug. What's not to like?

Here's the solicit:

The hit fan-favorite webcomic created by the Eisner Award-winning duo of MIKE NORTON and ALLEN PASSALAQUA is now a NEW COMIC SERIES! It’s been a few years since the last Kinmundian saved the world with the help of his faithful Battlepug, but a new threat arises. The epic tale returns as our favorite barbarian and his trusty overgrown dog renew their quest for insane adventure! Same dog. NEW TRICKS!

I'm pretty bummed that this book ends with issue #25. The magic of Curse Words is how much it'll make you laugh. War, magic, the possible end of the universe! This issue has it all. Curse Words is a book I recommend like it's my job. It's been a fun ride and I've loved every page. Charles Soule and Ryan Browne have made this title not only one of my favorite indies but favorite comics in general.

Here's the solicit:

There's only one issue left after this one, which makes us sad on this end - but the issue itself will make NO ONE sad! All stops continue to be pulled out, as the battle for the fate of... well, everything... blasts toward its conclusion. Wizord, Ruby, and Margaret are finally reunited, but will they be able to enjoy their lives together? Or will the final revenge of the evil demon Sizzajee doom them all? Come see!

I'm obsessed with Doom Patrol. They're the world's weirdest superheroes. Any week an issue of this book comes out is going to be a good week. I'm even more excited that DOC SHANER is drawing this one. Also check out that Nick Derington Beast Boy cover! That's right--Gar Logan is getting back with the Doom Patrol in this issue. It's going to be fun and weird time.

Here's the solicit:

Special 287th-anniversary issue! Someone in the city of Goliath is killing cops-robot cops, that is!-and it’s up to the Doom Patrol Detective Agency to find out who...but their only clues are pages torn from a pulp paperback littering the streets of this neo-noir nightmare of a city. The secret of Goliath will die along with their hope of escape unless the team can band together once again, just like the old days.

SPAWN #300

Greg Capullo and Todd McFarlane are a match made in hell! With guest writer Scott Snyder  and a bombardment of variants from the likes of Jason Shawn Alexander and J. Scott Campbell, this history making 300th issue of our favorite Hellspawn will be the can’t-miss issue of the week!

Here's the solicit:

SPAWN MAKES HISTORY! With this 300th issue, SPAWN becomes the longest-running independent series in comic book history. To celebrate, legendary artists TODD McFARLANE and GREG CAPULLO return with ALL-NEW interior pencils, with additional art provided by JASON SHAWN ALEXANDER, J. SCOTT CAMPBELL, and JEROME OPE A, a cavalcade of celebratory covers, and additional writing by SCOTT SNYDER! And next month, RECORDS WILL BE BROKEN with SPAWN #301!

I have been a big fan of both Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy since I was a child. One of my favorite aspects of modern DC books is the exploration of Ivy and Quinn’s relationship.  Right out of Heroes in Crisis, Tom King’s strength in that book was furthering the romantic bond the two Gotham City Sirens share. Now, with writer Jody Houser, I am looking forward to what she can bring to the table for the future of these two ladies in love.

Here's the solicit:

Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy are taking their show on the road in this new miniseries! They'll have to evade villains and heroes alike while they explore their relationship and unpack their time and experiences at Sanctuary. Set after the events of HEROES IN CRISIS and smack in the middle of "Year of the Villain," it's a journey across the DC Universe that will change their friendship forever...if they live that long!

This can’t be the end of this mini-series. The witty lines, the bewitching art, the dry jokes… I’m not ready to stop laughing!

Here's the solicit:

"RING OF FIRE" This action-packed finale has it all: death, destruction, the greatest sacrifice of all-even the Mall of America! KARL KESEL (Harley Quinn, Superboy) and TOM GRUMMETT (The Death of Superman, Superboy) go all-out in this action-packed last issue!

This book has just been so genius. It taps into a ton of our beings we tend to suppress that it almost requires a next-level knowledge of self-awareness. Wi-cked. Plus, the art is orgasmic… can we say that word here?

Here's the solicit:

On the edge of reality, Green Lantern Hal Jordan and Star Sapphire face death by power ring firing squad! Yes, Hal and Carol Ferris reunite (sort of) as they fight their way out of the improbable turn of events of the previous issue! In fact, with what happens next issue, they may not want to survive this one...

The showdown with Shadow Base is here!! They've been hunting and manipulating the Hulk since the start of the series, but now the tables have turned. The sun is setting and this new, terrifying Hulk knows exactly where they are! It's the Immortal Hulk vs the new Abomination, who will survive?? Better yet, will everyone else survive the ordeal???

Pick it up on Wednesday at your local comic book shop and find out!!! I know I will!!

Here's the solicit:

• The war has come home - and Shadow Base is the battleground. •  The stage is set for the final confrontation between the new ABOMINATION... •  ...and the IMMORTAL HULK.
