The Comic Lounge's Picks of the Week (9/18)

Another great week in comics. With so many "big" books coming out this week, let the Comic Loung crew help you decide on the books we think are must reads this week.

Wally's back!! After the events of HEROES IN CRISIS, I've been left with a lot of uncertainty about my favorite character. I'm hoping this is the beginning of the road of redemption for my favorite speedster. Wally's been through so much trauma, it's time for him to step back into the role of happiness and hope.

Here's the solicit:

His name is Wally West-and he was the Fastest Man Alive. That is, until the Multiverse was rewritten without him or his family in it. Wally returned and tried to make it work, but the damage was done. Spinning out of the events of HEROES IN CRISIS, follow the man who called himself Flash on an adventure to find redemption in a cosmos that has fought so hard to destroy him.

Holy shit!! That was my feeling after reading this issue. This continues to be one of my favorite books. Thomas and Randolph take it up another level with this issue. Don't sleep on this amazing series.

Here's the solicit:

Spencer's ascension through the ranks of the Aegis comes at a cost. Plus, one of the Aegis' rules is broken-leading to the introduction of an incredible new sorcerer!

This is set to be a big issue. I can only imagine the insanity that will ensue in this issue. Hickman has been delivering a perfect book every single week. I literally get anxiety sometimes when I think of what he has in store for us. This issue is gonna sell out fast so make sure you get to your LCS fast this week.

Here's the solicit:

Xavier's dream turns deadly for some of his students as they fight back against the humans' plan to eliminate them. Superstar writer Jonathan Hickman (FANTASTIC FOUR, AVENGERS, SECRET WARS) continues his reshaping of the X-Universe alongside Young Gun artist Pepe Larraz (EXTERMINATION, AVENGERS). The Future of the X-Men begins here!

What could be more heartwarming than a father and son reuniting after so long to spend some quality time together? Hunting down Aquaman and getting their revenge. It's Aquaman vs Black Manta and Mecha Manta this issue and I can't wait to see if this father/son team are still drift compatible enough to take down their archenemy.

Here's the solicit:

Black Manta is reunited with his dead father...but at a great cost to both! Meanwhile, Aquaman's investigation into the Amnesty Bay killer takes a stunning turn, and Mera must make a life-altering decision!

A whole new afterlife awaits Heimdal, and Lady Jane Foster is his guide. This week will be all about the Valkyrie’s new Journey into Mystery brought to you by Aaron, Ewing, and CAFU!

Here's the solicit:

VALKYRIE TAKES A BELOVED FRIEND ON THE JOURNEY OF THEIR AFTERLIFE! When a longstanding Marvel character dies at the hands of Bullseye, Jane Foster must accept her new role and carry them to the world beyond. But she is not the Valkyrie of the past - nor is Bullseye's victim any ordinary hero. Valhalla is only one hall of the dead. The multiversal afterlife awaits.

More family history and bonding in store for Gran and Duncan! Issue 2 of Gillen’s Once & Future is undoubtedly going to continue with the Arthurian Shenanigans, and it’s a definite must read this week!

Here's the solicit:

The McGuire family has held back supernatural threats for generations, but this time they messed up. As an ancient evil arises from the grave, Bridgette and Duncan find themselves up against forces bigger than they could have expected, and faces new and old are about to complicate things further.

Gerard Way is one of my favorite writers! Umbrella Academy is that type of comic that's just weird and out there for the sake of it. I love reading Ways work in trade because I want the biggest dose of strange possible. I've been waiting all summer for this and I hope you have too!

Here's the solicit:

With a new Netflix series, the award-winning graphic novels are back! Gerard Way (My Chemical Romance, Doom Patrol) and Gabriel Bá (Two Brothers, Casanova) have earned accolades on separate projects, and finally return for the latest chapter in the bizarre lives of their former teen superhero team. Faced with an increasing number of lunatics with superpowers eager to fight his wunderkind brood, Sir Reginald Hargreeves developed the ultimate solution... But their past is coming back to hunt them. Collects issues #1-7.

Here's the solicit:

• The Guardians have been torn asunder by the Universal Church of Truth! •  After revealing his secret, Rocket has come out of hiding to help rescue his former team...but will Groot be able to forgive him long enough to save their friends... •  ...or is this the end of the Guardians?!

A talking gorilla mercenary, the King of the Savage land, a founding Avenger and the Dora Milage general, what does this strange hodge podge group have in common?? They're the Agents of Wakanda!! Spinning off straight from the pages of the Avengers, this eclectic team is he here to fight the spooky, strange and weird, throw in a little bit of super spy action and you got yourself a great recipe for excitement and intrigue!! I love unexpected team ups and strange combinations and this book seems to have it in aces. Let's check it out!!

Here's the solicit:

From the pages of Jason Aaron's AVENGERS! Vampires. Aliens. Angry fish kings. Black Panther's hand-picked Agents of Wakanda can handle it all. And who better to lead them than the king of the world's most technologically evolved country? Wakanda is making waves on the world's map - and not everyone's a fan. With General Okoye's help, T'Challa will take Gorilla-Man, Ka-Zar and Wasp on a global fight for survival - to handle threats S.H.I.E.L.D. could only dream of!

Based on real events, Simon Says is a noir-style re-telling of an intriguing political story. The artwork is reminiscent of a vintage detective film, using selective colouring that amplifies the story. I wasn’t expecting to enjoy this so much, as the historical genre usually my cup of tea. However, the narrative prowess of SIMON SAYS has completely changed that.

Here's the solicit:

An artist, forced to paint swastikas on train cars for the Nazis during the Holocaust, has become an unlikely vigilante in pre-Cold War Europe. Alongside his army companion, Bruno, he hunts down the criminals responsible for murdering his wife, his family, and his people. SIMON SAYS is one part action-adventure, one part crime-noir and all high-stakes drama!

I’ve always been a huge fan of unique visual horror, and with the spooky season approaching, Boom! Studios’ upcoming graphic novel release promises to combine dark horror elements with the very real issue of postpartum depression. I’m a sucker for books that enlighten people on taboo issues; this is a concept I know will deliver. Boom! Studios seem to be knocking it out of the park with their horror stuff at the moment, so I’m eager to find out if this lives up to its first impressions.

Here's the solicit:

After moving into a new home with her husband, Emma begins to fear that a supernatural force in the house is putting their family in danger. This feeling intensifies after the birth of her child - her husband has become a stranger, her baby won't stop crying, and a looming darkness threatens to destroy their idyllic life. Afraid of her own family, alone in her new home and growing more desperate every day, Emma will protect her child-no matter the cost. Celine Loup takes a haunting look at the isolation of postpartum depression, exploring the very real fears associated with motherhood in this graphic novella of horror and suspense.

The way Young presents vulnerability in this fantasy world is astounding. It will reach you, and it’s unlike any other. This book just keeps getting better and better.

Here's the solicit:

A despondent Abel, carrying the weight of what he's learned in the Winter Woods, angrily parts ways his companion. Fearing for the boy's safety in the run-down Rust Belt city they wandered into, Fox returns just in time to find Abel snatched and in a heap of trouble!

Inspired by samurai and world cinema, J.J. Abrams created the most original Star Wars follow-up we could have asked for. Why wouldn’t I be picking this up?

Here's the solicit:

The most shocking and incredible comic of 2019 is here as J.J. ABRAMS (STAR WARS, STAR TREK, SUPER 8) and his son HENRY ABRAMS are joined by superstar artist SARA PICHELLI (MILES MORALES, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY) team up for SPIDER-MAN! What do they have planned for Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson?! Who is Cadaverous?! The Modern Master of Mystery Makes His Marvel this September!
