The Comic Lounge's Picks of the Week (12/18)

This is a perfect addition to the Hammerverse. Lemire and Zonjic are channeling Batman Year One on this one while also being something completely different and fresh. This is one tie-in that is just as excellent as the main series.

Here's the solicit:

Spiral City finds itself trapped in a vicious cycle of crime, corruption, and violence. With the heart of the city at stake, a vigilante rises in Skulldigger. However, when the nefarious Grimjim escapes from prison, will Skulldigger and his ward, Skeleton Boy, be enough to save Spiral City?

This is it everyone, the final issue of Tom King's epic Batman run. While this is an ending of sorts King will continue his story in Batman/Catwoman. I can only imagine what he has instore for us. What drastic change will be made to the mythos? Read it this Wednesday and find out.

Here's the solicit:

The stunning conclusion to "City of Bane" is here! How will Flashpoint Batman be vanquished from our dimension? What will become of Gotham Girl now that she's betrayed all she knows? How will the Bat team cope without Alfred? Will Catwoman stick around? Who will rebuild Gotham City? Is Batman ever going to be Batman again? The event of the summer now closes out the year, setting the stage for a whole new path for the Dark Knight Detective. You don't dare miss the extra-sized concluding chapter to Tom King's epic run on Batman-and it all leads to the new Batman and Catwoman series!

Yet another finale starring Batman this week. But this one is not just the end of the series but it's Scott Snyder's final word on Batman. Along with Greg Capullo, he has given us what I believe belongs in the upper echelon of Batman tales. Expect a wild, crazy and emotional ride on this one. Damn I can't wait!

Here's the solicit:

Gotham City has been remade. Omega reigns supreme. Can Batman finally accomplish what no other hero has and free the world from his dark reflection's shadow? Or is it too late for the recreated Caped Crusader?

Wow I thought this day would never come. That's right ANOTHER DC book coming to an end. A tale 2 years in the making. We will finally get the long awaited face off between Dr. Manhattan and Superman. What this book will mean to the future of DC is anyone's guess. But you can be sure that this DC fanboy is fucking excited.

Here's the solicit:

This is it! The final showdown between Dr. Manhattan and Superman shakes up the DC Universe to its very core! But can even the Man of Steel walk out from the shadow of Manhattan?

The end of an era. Jason Aaron concludes his 7 year run on the God of Thunder. It's bittersweet, while I'm stoked to read this book, I'm sad to see Aaron leave. How will he leave the fabled God before he passes the baton to Donny Cates? Expect a battle for the ages.

Here's the solicit:

THE FINAL CHAPTER OF THE YEARS-SPANNING, AWARD-WINNING SAGA! The sun has gone black. Midgard isn't far behind. The entire Multiverse is dying - and with it, the last of the gods. A millennium ago, the God of Thunder heard a whisper: "Gorr was right." Now Gorr the God of God-Butchers ascends to his final murder: the All-Father of all existence. Plus, a who's who of Jason's past THOR collaborators and a few surprise guests help close out the story in thunderous style!

Hell yeah, a Back Label book that isn't focused on the world of Gotham!!! This book looks abso-fucking-lutely insane. Daniel Warren Johnson is being given free reign to do his take on Wonder Woman and this sure to blow all of our minds.

Here's the solicit:

The celebrated creator of Murder Falcon and Extremity and artist of The Ghost Fleet, Daniel Warren Johnson brings bold sci-fi chops to his DC debut with a harrowing vision of Wonder Woman unlike anything you've ever seen. Princess Diana of Themyscira left paradise to save Man's World from itself. When Wonder Woman awakens from a centuries-long sleep to discover the Earth reduced to a nuclear wasteland, she knows she failed. Trapped alone in a grim future, Diana must protect the last human city from titanic monsters while uncovering its secret of this dead Earth-and how she may be responsible for it.

The Hill House comic line has been phenomenal so far. And The Low, Low Woods has been my most anticipated Hill House title. Prepare to have the skin scared off of you with supernatural forces, small town horror, relationships and more as delivered by author Carmen Maria Machado. Also I need more Dani art in my life

Here's the solicit:

Shudder-To-Think, PA, has been on fire for years. The coal mines beneath it are long since abandoned. The woods are full of rabbits with human eyes, a deer woman who stalks hungry girls, and swaths of skinless men. And the people in Shudder-to-Think? Well, they're not doing so well either. When El and Octavia wake up in a movie theater with no memory of the last few hours of their lives, the two teenage dirtbags begin a surreal and terrifying journey to discover the truth about the strange town that they call home.

Two issues in and Black Stars Above is already one of Vault's strongest titles. The story is eerie, accompanied by mind melting art. I mean this book is visually stunning. It's gothic, period piece horror. I'm all about it. Pick it up!

Here's the solicit:

The storm continues to gestate. Lost in a wilderness known as The Green Ribbon, Eulalie is faced with an impossible decision: return home to a family that has forsaken her, or finish her journey to the northern town to deliver the mysterious package. She must decide wisely, for threats lurk behind every tree and the snow has an appetite of its own.

I'll follow Charles Soule to any book he works on. That includes his explosive debut for his four issue miniseries around one of the biggest baddies in pop culture. Pick this book up and witness the fall of Ben Solo and the rise of Kylo Ren.

Here's the solicit:

WITH BEN SOLO’S FALL… COMES KYLO REN’S RISE! Young Ben Solo is legendary Jedi Luke Skywalker’s most promising pupil. As the son of Rebel Alliance heroes Leia Organa and Han Solo, as well as Luke’s own nephew, Ben has the potential to be a great force for light in the galaxy. But the Skywalker legacy casts a long shadow, the currents of the dark side run deep, and Darth Vader’s blood runs in Ben’s veins. Voices call from both his past and his future, telling him who he must be. He will shatter, he will be reforged, his destiny will be revealed. Snoke awaits. The Knights of Ren await. Ben Solo’s path to his true self begins here.
