The Comic Lounge's Picks of the Week (1/8/20)

RYAN'S PICKS

BATMAN #86

With Tom King's run over, it's a new day. James Tynion IV is taking over and his plans sound awesome. If you follow him on social media he has divulged some of his plans and it sounds like we're gonna get something different and really cool. This is a great time to jump on to the series if you haven't been reading it.

Here's the solicit:

It's a new day in Gotham City, but not the same old Batman. With Bane vanquished and one of his longtime allies gone, Batman has to start picking up the pieces and stepping up his game. Batman has a new plan for Gotham City, but he's not the only one. Deathstroke has returned as well, under a mysterious new contract that could change everything. Beginning a whole new chapter in the life of the Dark Knight, the epic art team of Tony S. Daniel and Danny Miki are joined by new series writer James Tynion IV!

YOUNG JUSTICE #12

The nostalgia still hasn't worn off for me. As a kid, the original Young Justice comic was always my favorite. So getting to read about them again has been an absolute delight. I can't wait to see how they integrate Naomi into the lineup. This is sure to be a fun read.

Here's the solicit:

It's an epic Wonder Comics crossover: Naomi, the Wonder Twins, and Young Justice all come together for the first time to confront the secrets behind the entire first year of the teen team's series. Where did Connor Kent come from? Why does Bart Allen remember everyone but no one else does? How does it all connect to Jinny Hex's trunk? It's a Wonder Comics blockbuster!

MILES MORALES THE END #1

Easily one of my favorite new characters of the past 10 years has been Miles Morales. Saladin Ahmed has been doing a great job since he took over Miles' adventures from Bendis. I can't wait to read about Miles in the future. Plus we have Damion Scott on art!!!

Here's the solicit:

THE FINAL MILES MORALES STORY! Humanity makes its last stand in the only place strong enough to survive: BROOKLYN. Former Spider-Man, Miles Morales, leads the last bastion of civilization into the future! Penned by MILES MORALES: SPIDER-MAN author SALADIN AHMED!

X-FORCE #5

This has quickly become my 2nd favorite X-Men book. With each passing issue I love it more and more. There's action, intrigue, and mystery. If this is any indication of what we're gonna get from Ben Percy in his Wolverine book, then that book is gonna be a hit as well. If there's one X-Men book you should be reading besides X-Men proper, it's this one.

Here's the solicit:

DEADLY CHOICES CARRY DARK CONSEQUENCES! First, Domino and Forge have to pick up the pieces as the team faces a major setback! Then, Beast takes matters into his own hands when a piece of new technology threatens the safety of the nation.

GEN'S PICK

UNEARTH TP VOL 01

The first number was all the rage on Instagram when it came out. Ryan also wrote an awesome review of it and the first issue scored a nice 8/10. I fully trust Ryan on this so it was really hard to wait for the TP since, as you know, I’m trying to keep my pull list to the strict minimum. The time has now come for me to discover this series, hopefully the rest of it lives up to the hype!

Here’s the solicit:

When a flesh-warping disease ravages a remote village in Mexico, a scientific task force travels to the inhospitable area to investigate the contamination. As victims of the illness are transformed in horrible ways, the task force traces the source of the disease to a nearby cave system—where they discover a bizarre, hostile ecosystem and a supernatural revelation from which they may never escape. This subterranean nightmare is brought to you by writers CULLEN BUNN (REGRESSION) and KYLE STRAHM (SPREAD) and rising star artist BALDEMAR RIVAS! Collects UNEARTH #1-5

DYLAN'S PICKS

BATTLEPUG #5

Killing John Wick’s dog is like sending the Kinmundian’s Battlepug into a portal that leads to the unknown. You just don’t do that. But if you find yourself in a situation where you do send that adorable giant slobbering dog into a portal, then prepared to be met with violence and steel.

Here’s the solicit:

The Queen of the Northland Elves has found a dangerous new weapon and she isn't afraid to use it! The last Kinmundian, his battlepug, and all their friends must stop her before she conquers our universe (and others)! Don't miss the stunning conclusion of this story arc that promises to completely change the world of BATTLEPUG as we know it!

TANK GIRL FULL COLOR CLASSICS 1993-1994

Back in the 90’s, there was secret stash of comics that the older kids kept from me. Within that stash box of comics was Dark Horse’s Tank Girl. it wasn’t until 1995, after the Tank Girl movie with Lori Petty and Naomi Watts came out and the older kids decided it was time for me to fall in love. Now, 25 years later, Titan Comics is releasing the series in FULL COLOR and I couldn’t be more happy to relive the excitement.

Here’s the solicit:

Tank Girl creators Alan Martin and Jamie Hewlett (of Gorillaz fame) present the next batch of original stories from the eponymous character’s heyday. Now readers can enjoy these classic stories in glorious full color, whether experiencing them again or for the first time.

MARIO'S PICKS

SYMBIOTE SPIDER-MAN ALIEN REALITY #2

I've really been enjoying these Symbiote Spider-Man mini-series as I like that they both take place in a simpler time in the continuity and are self contained. I liked what the first issue set up and I'm excited to see where the story goes in issue #2.

Here's the solicit:

THE MENACE OF HOBGOBLIN CONTINUES! •  Peter Parker's world is turned upside-down - but is it for the better?! •  What's so different about this world that Spider-Man would want to stay? •  GUEST STARRING DOCTOR STRANGE!

MAGICIANS #3

I'm not the biggest fan of Harry Potter but this is exactly the version of a school of magic with teens that would have been up my alley. One of the most surprising books for me from 2019 and I'm stoked to see where the story goes.

Here's the solicit:

After the shocking conclusion of the last issue, the five students chosen to learn battle magic are forced to confront the terrible consequences of what they've done, and what it could mean for the future of Brakebills. As tensions mount, the traditional Brakebills students and the newly admitted hedges begin to turn on one another.

TREVOR'S PICKS

STAR #1

From the heroic introduction of Star to the shocking reveal of her villainous nature, Kelly Thompson has had me locked in what this character could mean for Captain Marvel in the future. With the crazy twist of an infinity stone finding Star in her incarceration, I have been eager to see what this means for this character and what they could mean to the rest of the Marvel Universe going forward.

Here's the solicit:

BORN OF THE REALITY STONE, THE BREAKOUT CHARACTER FROM CAPTAIN MARVEL FLIES SOLO! Ambitious reporter Ripley Ryan rocked New York City when she became the hero STAR, adored by everyone. But in truth she was Dr. Minerva's attempt at a Kree-human Super-Soldier. Desperate for the strength to control her own destiny, she tried to kill Captain Marvel - and failed. Ripley was left, defeated and powerless, in the Raft...or so she thought. The Reality Stone has found her, and now no prison can hold her. You thought you knew what the Infinity Stones were capable of. Think again.

DEADPOOL #2

I have been anxiously waiting for the next issue after how much I found myself enjoying the first one on this new run of Deadpool. With Wade now the king of the monsters, I can’t wait to see how the rest of the hero and villain community react to this monstrous new power figure on the scene.

Here's the solicit:

DEADPOOL'S KINGDOM...IS CRUMBLING! •  As Deadpool tries to build up his new monster kingdom, he keeps running into obstacles. Obstacles named CAPTAIN AMERICA and ELSA BLOODSTONE. •  But they are far from his only problems: There's someone killing monsters, and their sights are set on those closest to Deadpool. •  Heavy hangs the head that wears the crown, particularly when it's in the sights of one of the deadliest people in the Marvel Universe!

AQUAMAN GIANT #2

Any week there is an Aquaman comic hitting the shelves is a great week. With an assortment of new and older stories to dip your toe in, this is a book I feel would be great for anyone looking to test the waters with Aquaman who hasn’t yet.

RENEE'S PICKS

DYING IS EASY #2

The first issue in this limited series was pretty low key. There’s a spoonful of backstory for our protagonist and a decent amount of conflict that shapes how the story may pan out.

Here’s the solicit:

From the powerhouse team of Joe Hill (Locke & Key) and Martin Simmonds (Punks Not Dead) comes the second chapter in the inaugural Syd "Sh*t-Talk" Homes mystery!

Comedy may be hard and dying may be easy, but getting yourself off the hook for murder? For Syd Homes, that's looking damn near impossible. The prime suspect in the death of joke stealer and general thief Carl Dixon, Syd's on the run, and it's going to take all of his investigative chops to suss out the real killer before he gets caught. And thrown in jail. With all the guys he locked up.

Luckily, he's already got a couple of suspects in mind...

CLOCK #1

I like a good pre-apocalypse race against the clock story. Hopefully the suspense keeps me reading each month.

Here’s the solicit:

MINISERIES PREMIERE

Within three weeks, hundreds of millions of healthy people worldwide contract various forms of aggressive cancer, and the proliferation, seemingly a viral outbreak, stumps the best scientific minds available. But after a leading cancer researcher loses his wife and watches his nine-year-old daughter begin to succumb to the same illness, he must race against the clock to end a global conspiracy that could propel the world straight into WWIII...or worse.

STRANGER THINGS INTO THE FIRE #1

I LOVED Stranger Things on Netflix so I was hyped to see this extension to the world of the Hawkins residents. Learning more about the subjects and Hawkins Lab is going to be epic.

Here’s the solicit:

Years after escaping Hawkins Lab, two of Dr. Brenner's former subjects seek to live normal lives. When news reaches them that the lab was shut down, they go on a harrowing search for

Nine, a powerful pyrokinetic whose shattered psyche threatens to burn them all to ashes if they can't find her and free her from her own malevolent imagination. * A pyrokinetic Hawkins Lab subject! * See the true effects of Dr. Brenner's meddling experiments.
