The Comic Lounge's Picks of the Week (1/22/20)

What else can I say about this book that I haven't already said? This is more than just a comic, it's truly something special, it's a work of art. This is one book that I can literally recommend to anyone and I have been every chance I get. Make sure you pick it up this week. If you cant find it buy it directly from Uncivilized Book.

Here's the solicit:

Ginseng Roots unearths the earliest recorded knowledge of ginseng and its healing properties. From the mythic figure that first discovered it: Shennong, the god of farming and medicine, through tales of ginseng hunters in the mountains of ancient China, to the first ever International Wisconsin Ginseng Festival in the author's hometown. A red thread of history and time binds the ginseng buyers from Asia with rural growers in America.

After last issue, I'm all in on Tynion's Batman. I love this new turn he's taking Bruce on. Plus the underlying mystery of who's using Catwoman's plans against her and Batman. Then you bring in my second favorite villain, The Riddler. This is gonna be a lotta fun.

Here's the solicit:

The Riddler has been lying low since his humiliating defeat as part of Bane's army- but as costumed assassins start to make their way into Gotham City, Edward Nygma may have the answers he's been looking for. Or at least, the answer to why Deathstroke is trying to kill him! Is it possible that Batman's tussle with Slade Wilson was all just a ruse to get the killer closer to his true target?

The reveal last issue was probably my favorite issue of Superman in awhile. I loved his reasons for it and how he told some of his closest friends. I can't wait to see the long-term ramifications and it all starts here.

Here's the solicit:

One day later! What happens the day after Superman reveals his secret identity to the world? And what repercussions will his decision have across the entire DC Universe? Plus, Superman: president of Earth?

If you're reading IMMORTAL HULK, then you know that Al Ewing is a brilliant writer. So when I heard he was taking over the book after Cates left, I was even more excited than I was before. This is a great point to h=jump back on the book and is sure to be one hell of a run.

Here's the solicit:

Once, they were a team of misfits. Now they're a family, and they've earned their peace. But the universe is not a peaceful place -- and it's only getting worse. The Great Empires are in turmoil. The rule of law is dead. And amidst the chaos, the Gods of Olympus have returned -- harbingers of a new age of war, reborn to burn their mark on the stars themselves. Someone has to guard the galaxy - but who will accept the mission? And will they survive it? Al Ewing (IMMORTAL HULK) and Juann Cabal (FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN) bring you in on the ground floor of a whole Marvel Universe of action and suspense!

I love these giant size anniversary issues. While they don't always have stories consequential to the current storylines, they're a lot of fun. Plus I love that DC is returning Wonder Woman to her legacy numbering, I still don't understand the constant need for rebooting to number 1's.

With an all-star cast of creators this is sure to be a great pick up on Wednesday.

Here's the solicit:

An all-star 96-page celebration of the Amazon Princess by longtime favorites and acclaimed new voices! In the lead story, Wonder Woman's epic "Year of the Villain" battle comes to a close, leading the way to new challenges ahead. Additionally, this oversized gem tells tales from Diana's past, present and future by some of the greatest storytellers in the business- including Colleen Doran, Mariko Tamaki, the Teen Titans: Raven team of writer Kami Garcia and artist Gabriel Picolo, and legendary Wonder Woman creators returning to the character, including Gail Simone and Greg Rucka!

Kieron Gillen is a bit hit or miss for me but he knocked it out of the park with this series. It was one of the most surprising new series from last year and although it's the final issue, I'm really looking forward to seeing how Gillen wraps up such an interesting story.

Here's the solicit:

With the fate of the world in the balance, Duncan must finally accept his role in the larger story. But has Gran trained him well enough to defeat the undead King of the Britons by himself?

Old Guard Force Multiplied was one of my most anticipated series of last year so I'm really looking forward to what Rucka, Fernandez and Miwa bring to this next issue. I have a feeling it's going to be great.

Here's the solicit:

Andy wrestles with her past, and Nile continues to come to grips with her future. As their war against human trafficking escalates, their adversary is ultimately revealed, and the looming confrontation will unearth things long buried... Soon to be a major motion picture starring Charlize Theron and KiKi Layne, THE OLD GUARD roars back! From the acclaimed New York Times-bestselling team of GREG RUCKA and LEANDRO FERNÁNDEZ and the stellar artistic talents of DANIELA MIWA, JODI WYNNE, and ERIC TRAUTMANN.

The world could always use more podcasts. The idea of such an old school news person like J.J. Jameson doing a podcast has my curiosity and I can't wait to see how it goes when Spider-Man goes on it. There better be some offer codes from sponsors!

Here's the solicit:

• J. Jonah Jameson kicks off his new life as a podcast host and his first guest? SPIDER-MAN! •  JJJ and Spidey have been on pretty good terms for a while now, so it seems fitting that JJJ needs to sabotage it and put the entire city in danger, right? •  Don't miss "My Podcast with Jonah"!

Apocalypse's agenda is starting to reveal itself and with the whole Excalibur team finally together, this might be the issue where the first mutant's motives are revealed.

Here's the solicit:

The Secret of Rogue's Coffin! Locked in her mysterious coffin, Rogue dreams. Meanwhile, Apocalypse performs a ritual, and the throne of power changes hands. The reign of mutantkind reaches the Otherworld at last.

The Fantastic Four's origin was changed with such a dramatic reveal last issue and with the truth known now, I'm anxious to see what Marvel's first family will do.

Here's the solicit:

"Point of Origin" Part 5! •  We weren't kidding. That big secret that we promised last issue, that really happened. This issue is the fallout. •  Punches will be thrown. Lives will be changed. And Reed Richards is going to drop some scary science on the planet called Spyre. •  You know those sci-fi rules about "prime directives"? The Fantastic Four aren't playing by those rules. Not this time.
