The Comic Lounge's Picks of the Week (3/4/20)

RYAN'S PICKS

FLASH #750

This is an issue I've been looking forward to for months. I don't need to tell you guys how much I love Flash, you should know by now. Williamson and every creator that worked on this issue delivered THE best anniversary issue I've ever read. This also sets up some interesting things for DC moving forward.

Here's the solicit:

Beginning: "The Flash Age"! The story we've been building toward since issue #50 comes to a head! While a supercharged Speed Force wreaks havoc on Barry Allen's life, a new threat appears on the horizon in the form of the deadly Paradox. Destined to destroy the Flash's legacy, Paradox sends his herald, Godspeed, to trap the Flash family! Plus, in this special anniversary issue: tales from across the generations of super-speedsters by an all-star lineup of writers and artists!

STRANGE ADVENTURES #1

When this book was announced I could hardly contain my excitement. I've always had an affinity for DC's stable of underrated characters, especially Adam Strange. What King, Gerads, and Shaner gave us though was something incredibly special. mark my words this book will definitely be winning some Eisner awards this year.

Here's the solicit:

After winning five Eisner Awards and topping year-end "best of lists," the comic book of 2019 was Mister Miracle. The comic book of 2020 will be Strange Adventures. The Mister Miracle team of writer Tom King and artist Mitch Gerads are joined by fan-favorite artist Evan "Doc" Shaner to bring you an epic tale in the tradition of Watchmen, The Dark Knight Returns, and DC: The New Frontier-a story of blood, war, and love that readers will be talking about for years to come. Adam Strange is the hero of Rann, a man famous throughout the galaxy for his bravery and honor. After leading his adopted home to victory in a great planetary war, Adam and his wife Alanna retire to Earth, where they are greeted by cheers, awards, and parades. But not all is as happy and nice as it seems, as the decisions Adam made during battles on Rann come back to haunt his family and threaten the entire DC Universe. And now a surprise DC hero will have to choose between saving Adam Strange and saving the world. A story like no other, Strange Adventures is an ambitious, thrilling, shocking, and beautiful 12-issue saga that will push Adam Strange to the breaking point-and beyond!

STRANGE ACADEMY #1

This is a book that has some serious potential to be really fuckin awesome. Skottie Young and Humberto Ramos teaming up seems like a match made in heaven. I love when Marvel takes chances on concepts like this and it seems like this might be a sleeper hit of the year for them.

Here's the solicit:

A SORCERER SCHOOL FOR THE MARVEL UNIVERSE! The Marvel Universe has mysteriously changed in such an alarming way that Doctor Strange has done what he's avoided for decades; he's opened a school for young sorcerers. Young people from around the world with aptitude in magic have been brought together in New Orleans to study the Mystic Arts under Strange, Brother Voodoo, the Ancient One, the Scarlet Witch, Magik, Hellstrom and ALL your favorite Marvel magicians. But with all the new magical threats, is it too late?!

GEN'S PICKS

MERCY #1

Not gonna lie, I’m picking this one up for what I think is an incredibly beautiful cover. The description also mentions the presentation of ‘sensual Victorian gothic horror about otherness, damnation, redemption, and what it means to be a monster’. I can never resist a beautiful Victorian inspired tale and I’m always in the mood for demons and darkness. That’s a yes for me.

Here’s the solicit:

When the placid mining village of Woodsburgh is disturbed by a series of brutal murders, the settlement is in turmoil. And as the first snow covers the chaos in a white blanket, a mysterious woman in black arrives, eliciting a totally different kind of unrest. But who is Lady Hellaine, really? And what’s her secret agenda?

OUTER DARKNESS/CHEW #1

I’m a big fan of Chew. It’s fun, it’s dynamic, it’s stupid and funny. So, when I heard they were doing a crossover, I immediately added it to my ‘’to read’’ list. I don’t know a lot about Outer Darkness but it seems as equally interesting as Chew and I’m always interested in discovering more new stories!

Here’s the solicit:

THE GREATEST CROSSOVER EVER!Tony Chu is a modern-day cop who gets psychic impressions from what he eats. Joshua Rigg is a 28th-century starship captain who flies through an outer space filled with demons, monsters, and ghosts. Sounds like a perfect recipe for a comic book crossover, don’t it? Well, be careful what you wish for, because CHEW/OUTER DARKNESS is warping your way, bringing together the reunited multiple Eisner Award-winning CHEW team, writer JOHN LAYMAN and artist ROB GUILLORY, with OUTER DARKNESS’ regular resident artistic genius, AFU CHAN!

TREVOR'S PICKS

BLACK CAT #10

The Black Cat/Wolverine Team-Up continues! I mean that's all there is to it to make it an exciting issue that I've been looking forward to reading. Come for the Bub, stay for the great series.

Here's the solicit:

• Felicia and Logan on the run from all matter of Madripoorian murder squads! • Kade Kilgore, former head of the Hellfire Club, current boss of the criminal capital of the world, has marked them for death and you won't believe who comes to collect!

JUSTICE LEAGUE ODYSSEY #19

Time is of the essence in this issue! Time is running out for the JLO. This issue has to do with time! Jessica Cruz's ragtag Justice League made an out of time ally and they will need to work quickly before Darkseid and her old BFFs decide to crash the party.

Here's the solicit:

Lost beyond the edge of the universe, the misfit team of Justice League Odyssey crosses paths with Epoch. The Lord of Time has a great plan to solve everything, but it might be the single most dangerous thing anyone has ever done. As Jessica Cruz and her team try to figure out if he's a genius, or crazy-or both-time is running out. A new threat is closing in on them, in the form of Darkseid's latest generation of lethal New Gods.

EXCALIBUR #8

I learned there was another Bloodstone running around in the Marvel Universe last issue. Coincidentally, that Bloodstone learned that man was no longer the most dangerous game as he found some new trophies to set his sights on. This stuff is getting wild and I love it!

Here's the solicit:

HARK! THE HUNT FOR TRUTH Excalibur emerges from the woods with a journey before them. Their destination: Starlight Citadel.
