The Comic Lounge Picks of the Week (5/15)

May 14, 2019

Wow! What a week it's been. We got a new "Spider-Man: Far From Home" trailer, which teased so much new stuff being added to the MCU (a multiverse?!?!?). It picks up right after Endgame and sets up Phase 4 of the MCU. It looks like it might be the best Spider-Man movie yet. Also, any of you "Game of Thrones" fans that saw last night's episode, WTF!!!. That was such a brutal episode. I won't go into any details in case you haven't watched it. But with one episode left, it will be interesting to see who takes the Iron Throne. Who do you guys think will do it?

Back to comics, here are the Comic Lounge Picks of the Week. There's a lot of great stuff, with conclusions, revelations, this is sure to be a great pile of books to read.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #5

This book has been one of the best Marvel books in their lineup. Ever since Donny Cates and Geoff Shaw reunited, this book has been exactly what Marvel has been missing, since THANOS ended. This, in my opinion, is the best iteration of the Guardians in years. As our new team is scouring the universe to stop the "new" Thanos who has transferred his consciousness into a new body after his death. It's an awesome plot with a great artist, not to mention we get more Cosmic Ghost Rider. You can't sleep on this book, you saw what happened with Cates and Shaw's THANOS, this is a modern classic in the making, you don't wanna miss out.

Here's the solicit:

HELA HATH NO FURY!
•  At the mercy of the Goddess of Death!
•  Hela's dreams of resurrecting Thanos are finally within reach...
•  But what will the Guardians have to sacrifice in order to prevent that?

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #21

This is it, after months of Kraven gathering animal themed villains, along with Spider-Man, caging them up to be hunted by the rich, we've reached the conclusion. Nick Spencer and Humberto Ramos' "Hunted" has been an entertaining story from the beginning. While this arc hasn't always been the strongest, some of the HU issues focused on the villains really helped flesh out the story. Kraven has always been a great Spider-Man villain, so any arcs starring him are a must read for me. We finally get to see his true intentions after months of waiting. How will Spider-Man defeat him? Who will survive at the end? It all ends this Wednesday.

Here's the solicit:

THE CLIMACTIC CONCLUSION OF "HUNTED" IS HERE!
•  Spidey faces an impossible situation that will push him as far as he's ever been pushed.
•  Who lives and who dies when the hunters become the prey?

BATMAN #71

Tom King is heading into "City of Bane" at a breakneck pace. Last issue saw Thomas Wayne and Bane plotting Batman's demise. While they each have their reasons, the journey is what makes this essential reading. Mikel Janin joined King for this arc, and his art is always a welcome treat. Te realism he adds to book bring an added depth to the story. While some of you out there may not always love King's run, I assure you that this is without a doubt one of the high points of the series. With Brice hunting down Bane, I can only imagine what he'll think once he sees his father teamed up with one of his greatest adversaries.

Here's the solicit:

"The Fall and the Fallen" continues! Will it be father and son working together, or tearing each other apart? When it comes to the Waynes, expect a little of both. In the quest to get Bruce Wayne to hang up the cape and cowl, Thomas Wayne is going to have to use a little tough love. Only, not all the muscle behind it will be his own.

NAOMI #5

When this book was first announced, it was surrounded by mystery and a promise of something huge being added to the DCU. Since it's launch, Brian Michael Bendis, David Walker and Jamal Campbell have given us something special and unique, something that was sorely lacking in todays comics. Month after month, we've all speculated as to "who" Naomi is. Well the wait is over, this Wednesday we finally learn her true origins. No matter what we learn, Naomi has captured the hearts of everyone who's read this book. With one issue left, I can't wait to see what the future holds for her.

Here's the solicit:

This is it! In this issue, all secrets are revealed! Who is Naomi? Where did she come from? What can she do? And what does it mean for the rest of the DC Universe? It's the one you've been waiting for from Bendis, Walker and Campbell.

GIDEON FALLS #13

Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino's GIDEON FALLS has been one twisted, psychological mind fuck. I never know where this series is gonna go next, and that's what keeps me coming back every month. If you aren't reading the series, go catch up and see what all the hype is about. Lemire's terrifying script shows why he's one of the best writers in the industry, he melds horror, mystery and a touch of parallel worlds all into one book. Not to mention that I spend just as much time pouring over Sorrentino's art, as I do reading the book, to catch every little detail he puts in. This is another can't miss book from Image, and it only gets better with each passing issue.

Here's the solicit:

"STATIONS OF THE CROSS," Part Two: Father Burke's hunt for The Laughing Man killer goes from the Old West to a steampunk version of Gideon Falls (complete with an otherworldly version of The Black Barn) where "The Bishop" is a new piece added to the cosmic chess board.
