The Comic Lounge Picks of the Week (7/3)

July 2, 2019

Forgive me if I don't have much to say in this intro, I'm still reeling over the conclusion of WAR OF THE REALMS. Almost a week and I still can't stop thinking how amazing that book was.

Anyways here are the picks for this week. A lot of first issues and the beginning of a new arc of YOUNG JUSTICE. These are all books you should definitely check out.

LOIS LANE #1

Finally after years and years without her own book, Lois Lane returns to her own title.

This is sure to be one of the most talked about books this week. DC has really put some A-list talent on it by bringing on Rucka and Perkins.

LOIS LANE is a book that is long overdue. In my opinion she is just as integral part of the DCU as Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. I can't wait to see wha they have in store for us.

Here's the solicit:

On the road and out of Metropolis-and carrying a secret that could disrupt Superman's life-Lois Lane embarks on a harrowing journey to uncover a threat to her husband and a plot that reaches the highest levels of international power brokers and world leaders. Critically acclaimed and best-selling author Greg Rucka and master storyteller Mike Perkins team up for a tale of conspiracy, intrigue and murder that pushes even Lois to her limits.

DOOM PATROL: WEIGHT OF THE WORLDS #1

Finally, we see the "Worlds Strangest Superheroes" return. Guided by the amazing Gerard Way. This is just the start of DC's second wave of books from the "Young Animal" imprint.

The first volume of Doom Patrol was a worthy successor to the amazing Grant Morrison run. Way has a clear love for the characters and is sure to give us another beautifully strange book. If you missed this the first go round, don't sleep on this new volume, it's just the right amount of weird that everyone needs in their life.

Here's the solicit:

All hail the Supreme Shape! Gerard Way and the World's Strangest Superheroes return in an all-new series that takes them beyond the borders of time and space! Featuring artwork by acclaimed cartoonist James Harvey, this issue finds the Doom Patrol facing off against the fanatical fitness fiends of planet Orbius and the Marathon Eternal! Meanwhile, Cliff Steele, formerly known as Robotman, must come to terms with his new body of flesh and bone...yet the real test turns out to be something far more frightening: his mom.

YOUNG JUSTICE #7

Since Bendis launched this In January, it has consistently been one of my favorite DC books. Maybe it's the fact that these are characters that hold a special place in my heart. Or maybe, it's because Bendis is kicking ass on this book.

The events of the last issue saw our heroes lost in the Multiverse. I can only imagine what's in store for us with this one. This is sure to be an arc filled with all sorts of DC lore, which is right up my alley. Not to mention Tim Drake is getting a new name??? This is definitely at the top of my read pile on Wednesday.

Here's the solicit:

Young Justice-lost in the Multiverse! After the explosive conclusion to their Gemworld adventure, the team is having a tough time finding their way back to their Earth. No, we can't tell you where they end up, but rest assured, you will be surprised! But as exciting as all that is, we have bigger problems to deal with as Tim Drake is about to do something he has only done...lots of times before. He is about to announce his new alias...a new superhero name. A Young Justice name. And this time, it's permanent. Like, forever.

SEA OF STARS #1

Just look at that cover... Now look at the two awesome writers writing it... Exactly! How could you pass this up.

A new sci-fi book, with Jason Aaron attached, SOLD! A Space Monkey that rides on a Space Dolphin... come on guys I can't make this shit up. I won't give to much away, but let me just say, this has gotta be on everyone's pull. It's that good.

Let me say it again, GO BUY THIS BOOK!

Here's the solicit:

"LOST IN THE WILDS OF HEAVEN," Part One: Being a space trucker sounds like a cool job, but in reality, it can be boring as hell. So when recently widowed Gil gets a long-haul gig across the universe, he figures it's safe enough to bring his young son Kadyn along for the ride-that is, until their "big rig" gets bitten in half by a gigantic Space Leviathan! Now separated from his son-with a breached suit that's venting oxygen at an alarming rate-Gil must defy the odds and stay alive long enough to rescue Kadyn. But meanwhile, Kadyn seems to be getting all the help he needs from a talking Space Monkey riding a Space Dolphin... or maybe it's the strange powers he's suddenly manifesting?! From the writing duo of JASON AARON (SOUTHERN BASTARDS, Thor) and DENNIS HALLUM (Cloak & Dagger, Vader: Dark Visions), with dazzling art by STEPHEN GREEN (Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.) and cosmic colors by RICO RENZI (Spider-Gwen), comes a brand-new science fiction series with all the scope and heart of the The Neverending Story crossed with the imaginative weirdness of Miyazaki-an intense, galaxy-spanning adventure that's suitable for fans of all ages!

NO ONE LEFT TO FIGHT #1

This is the comic you always wanted. At least that's what the cover says. But seriously, this book looks so effing crazy and has strong Dragon Ball Z influences. I've never seen this many people push a book like this has been.

Plus, when the owner of my LCS likes it so much that he sends out an email telling people how good it is, I know I have to buy it. And, the writer's doing a signing at my store on Wednesday. So.... I think it's safe to say I'll be buying it his week.

But seriously, this book not only sounds really interesting but the art is absolutely phenomenal and the colors pop off of every page.

This is a book that has just enough intrigue that I think warrants picking up the first issue to give it a try.

Here's the solicit:

They've saved the planet countless times, but what happens after the final battle has been won? Creators Aubrey Sitterson (The Comic Book Story of Professional Wrestling, G.I. Joe) & Fico Ossio (Spider-Man, Revolution) take inspiration from the legendary Dragon Ball to tell a story of regret, resentment, and growing older, one that asks, "What does a fighter do when there's no one left to fight?"
